Transformation as part of my life

Bard Papegaaij

I began my career working at the forefront of machine translation, artificial intelligence and machine learning research. There I discovered that in almost every case, the technological aspects of the goals we were trying to achieve was the easiest part. Much more difficult was figuring out how to get people to adapt to the changes introduced by these technologies; how to collaborate and co-create better outcomes for everyone involved; and how to ensure organizations of any size truly benefit from the potential for transformation and growth offered by the digital industrial revolution.

Always seeking ways to bring people, change and technology closer together, I worked as an Enterprise Architect, Senior Consultant and (interim) CIO for a variety of companies since the late 1980s. Over time, however, my focus shifted more and more towards the human side of the equation.

In 1999, I co-founded Transgrowth International Pty Ltd, to help businesses find their purpose, redefine their mission and shape their culture to achieve optimal performance and agility in times of change. In 2009, I joined Gartner to continue my work on leadership, team dynamics, and organizational cultures on the global stage.

During years with Gartner, I met and worked with hundreds of companies, advising them on ways to improve in the face of change, accelerated by technology. As an analyst and vice president of research, I produced over 100 research notes and reports, presented at client events and Gartner seminars and symposiums, chaired the 2017 Gartner APAC Symposium, and was a faculty member of the Leadership Development Academy (ALD) by Gartner from 2011 onwards.

In 2018, I left Gartner to fully refocus on the people side of organizational performance and change. My approach is based on a deep understanding of human nature and the social dynamics that occur in organizations. I am driven by the desire to ‘rehumanize’ work and society: to put humans back at the center of how we do things and why we do them. At the same time, I remain pragmatic and results-oriented in everything I do. I’m not just talking about change; I help change happen by helping people get better at it.
